My name is Karen Kleinschmidt and I began my employment at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School as part-time school librarian in 2002.  I am a self-starter, well-organized and detail oriented individual with a ready smile.

Encouraging the love of reading in students is done by making library time fun and exciting by exposing students to various literary genres utilizing both print and non print materials.  To evermore encourage students, a wide array of books are always displayed throughout the library including seasonal materials and a section of new additions to spark their interest.

Shortly after my arrival at OLMC, I embarked on the task of computerizing our library with over 7,500 print and non-print materials.  In 2010, the library was fully up and running with each student having their own library card number and circulating all materials through the use of our new technology!

I am the chairperson for the Scholastic Book Fairs which are held twice a year in our library.  This is a fun and exciting time for our students which aides in motivating our students to read by offering a wide selection of books/materials and also supports for the acquisition of new materials for our library.

To continue to promote reading, students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Six Flags Read to Succeed Program in which students par take by reading and logging 6 or more hours of reading and earn a free ticket to ride at the New England Six Flags theme park!  This program is typically rolled out between November and January and is available to students in grades K-6th.

For the love of Dr. Seuss, the school library is engulfed with his works during the month of March in which all of his books are displayed and his birthday is celebrated by reading the famous “The Cat in the Hat” or “Green Eggs and Ham”.  In addition, a special event or celebration of sorts may be planned.
